Picking the right camera for content creation can be overwhelming with soooo many options. It’s easy to get stuck in research mode forever.
Trust me, I’ve been there—watching hours of YouTube reviews, reading forums, and debating whether I really need a new camera or if I’m just looking for an excuse to buy more gear. (It’s usually both.)
I originally wrote this guide in 2020 with my go-to recommendations at the time, but since then, both technology and my own needs have changed. I recently found myself searching for a new camera again, and after diving deep into research, I figured it was the perfect time to update this list with my latest recommendations for 2025.
Whether you're snapping photos for your blog, filming YouTube videos, or capturing Instagram Reels, this guide will help you pick the perfect camera for your content creation journey.
What to Look for in a Camera for Blogging, Vlogging, and Social Media
The best camera for you depends on how you plan to use it.
Are you mostly taking photos for your blog or Instagram? Filming YouTube videos? Shooting quick TikToks and Reels? Maybe you want a do-it-all camera that handles both photos and video well.
Before you buy, here are some key things to consider:
Do you want a long-term investment or an entry-level camera?
Are you looking for something that will last you for years, or do you want a budget-friendly option to get started with now?
What’s your budget?
Cameras range from a couple of hundred dollars to several thousand. How much are you comfortable spending?
How important is portability?
Will you be carrying this camera everywhere for travel and daily content creation, or is a larger, more professional setup okay?
What’s your skill level?
Do you want a simple camera with great auto settings, or do you prefer full manual control?
What type of content are you creating?
Do you need 4K video? Slow motion? Great low-light performance? Consider the type of content you create most.
How important is connectivity?
Do you need built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for quick transfers to your phone?
Do you need interchangeable lenses?
Would you rather have a simple fixed-lens camera, or do you want the flexibility to swap out lenses for different looks?
My Favorite Cameras for Content Creation
Over the years, I’ve gone through my fair share of cameras—some I loved, some I outgrew, and some I regret splurging on.
Right now, these are my go-to cameras and my personal content creation stack:
Photography: Fujifilm X100F
My absolute favorite for exploring my hobby of street photography. It’s compact and makes everyday moments look magical. I also love the vintage look of the body! it’s seriously such a fun camera. Before this, I shot on the Sony a6000, which was a solid camera for learning photography!Video: Sony ZV-1
Small but mighty! The built-in mic and great low-light performance make it perfect for vlogging and filming educational videos for my YouTube channel about personal growth.Everyday Content: iPhone 13 Pro
Since I always have my phone on me, I use it when I don’t have my other cameras with me. It’s my go-to for capturing spontaneous moments, and honestly, it’s all you need to start creating content. I feel like the camera on the iPhone 13 Pro is pretty good, so I haven’t felt the need to upgrade (although my battery life it starting to take a hit).
A guide to the Best Cameras for Content Creators
Based on my own research, personal use, and a little bit of "borrowing" from my friends (thank you, friends!), these are my top camera recommendations for content creation. Whether you're a beginner, hobbyist, or full-time creator, these picks will help you capture high-quality photos and videos for your blog, YouTube channel, or social media.
That said, if you're looking for a camera for professional photography, videography, or, say, wildlife photography in the Serengeti—I can’t promise these will be the perfect fit. But for everyday content creation? They’ll do the job beautifully!
Best for Beginners: Sony a6000
Best for Travel & Everyday: Fujifilm X100VI
Best for Vlogging: Sony ZV-1 or DJI Osmo Pocket 3
Best Compact Camera with Flash: Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III
Best for Advanced Users: Sony A7 III
1. Best Beginner Camera with Interchangeable Lenses: Sony Alpha 6000 Series
Recommended for: Photography & light video
Okay, I’ll admit it—I’m biased toward Sony cameras! The Sony Alpha 6000 series is an amazing first step into mirrorless cameras. It’s beginner-friendly, has great autofocus, and lets you swap lenses as you grow your skills.
There are newer models, such as the Sony a6700, but the older models are still super solid! I’ve never used the video on the Sony a6000, but I’ve heard the newer models aren’t bad for video. I’d recommend this primarily for photography.
2. Best Travel & Everyday Camera: Fujifilm X100 Series
Recommended for: Photography
If I could only take one camera on a trip, this would be it. The Fujifilm X100 series has a built-in fixed lens (so no lens swapping needed) and the film simulations give your photos a gorgeous, nostalgic look straight out of the camera—no editing required!
If you’d like more flexibility with lenses, the Fujifilm X-T30 or X-T30 II would be comparable to the X100 series but with interchangeable lenses.
I purchased a used X100F at the beginning of 2025, which is an older model, but if you can swing the price point, the X100VI would be the newest one.
From my research, if you’re not a camera nerd, you most likely won’t notice the differences between shooting on an X100F or X100VI if you’ve only used the X100F.
3. Best Cameras for Vlogging: Sony ZV-1, Sony ZV-E10, DJI Osmo Pocket 3, iPhone
Sony ZV-1
A solid all-in-one option with a built-in mic and excellent low-light performance. I’ve taken this one with me on my travels when I wanted to focus on video content, but it’s also great for photos in a pinch. (No flash)
Sony ZV-E10
The same great vlogging features as the Sony ZV-1, but with interchangeable lenses.
DJI Osmo Pocket 3
If you love smooth cinematic shots, this tiny stabilized camera is a dream. I might snag this one next, because of it’s size and quality!
iPhone
If you’re just starting, don’t stress about buying a fancy camera—your phone is more than enough to create great content!
4. Best Compact Camera with Flash: Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III
Recommended for: Photography with video capabilities
It’s a mouthful to stay, but a fantastic option for creators who want something pocket-sized but powerful. The Canon PowerShot G7X Mark III camera has a great pop-up flash and works well in low-light situations—perfect for nighttime events, moody restaurant dates, or a fun night out when you want to capture the moment without it looking grainy.
5. Best Advanced Camera for Photo & Video: Sony Alpha 7 Series
Recommended for: Professional photography & video
If you’re ready to level up your content, the Sony a7 series is one of the best full-frame mirrorless options out there. It’s a favorite among YouTubers and professional photographers for a reason—stunning quality, great dynamic range, and top-tier performance.
Many of my full-time travel content creator friends use the Sony a7 III! It’s a bit bulkier than the Sony a6000, but still lighter than many of the other cameras out there.
Where to Find Budget Cameras
If you're looking for a more affordable way to get a great camera, consider checking out eBay, Facebook Marketplace, KEH Camera, or B&H Used for second-hand deals.
You can often find gently used cameras at a fraction of the price! I also recommend going with older models.
I used to always jump on having the “newest”, but especially when it comes to cameras, older models are still fantastic!
For reference, I purchased my FujiFilm X100F on eBay, and my Sony A6000 from someone on OfferUp.
So, which camera is best for you and your content creation?
At the end of the day, the best camera is the one that fits your needs, lifestyle, and budget.
You don’t need the most expensive gear to create amazing content—some of my favorite photos and videos were shot on my phone! (Including ones I’ve had brand partnerships for)
Start with what you have, upgrade when you’re ready, and most importantly—keep creating. ✨
